FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: How do I book the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra for a performance?
A: See our booking page.

Q: Who is the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra?
A: The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra is Indiana’s first permanent repertory jazz orchestra dedicated to the music of the big bands. Composed of 16 outstanding professional instrumentalists and 4 talented vocalists from Central Indiana, the IJO was created to represent the entire dynamic history of the Big Band. The IJO is the newest performing arts organization in Indianapolis dedicated to serving the Central Indiana community at large.

Q: What is a “repertory jazz orchestra?”
A: “repertory jazz orchestra” is a large ensemble that is patterned after the great musical groups of the Big Band Era. Bands like Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, among others. Repertory jazz orchestras are dedicated to preserving the great music of the past through the medium of the Big Band jazz ensemble.

Q: What kind of music does a repertory jazz orchestra perform?
A: A repertory jazz orchestra performs Big Band music that has withstood the test of time. Primarily this is music from the 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s that is universally recognized as the greatest jazz and popular music ever written. Music by songwriters like George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rogers, Jerome Kern, and Duke Ellington, among others.

Q: Why are repertory jazz orchestras important?
A: Just like the symphony orchestra is critical in the preservation of classical music, the jazz orchestra is critical in the preservation of jazz and popular music. During the 1930’s and 40’s, jazz was the dominant popular music in America. The Big Band was the voice of that music.

Q: How does a jazz orchestra operate financially?
A: A repertory jazz orchestra operates just like any symphony orchestra. Like the symphony, a repertory jazz orchestra usually is registered as a not-for-profit organization. It is community-supported through ticket sales, donations, sponsorships, and grants. The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra is part of the Jazz Arts Society of Indiana, a statewide not-for-profit arts organization.

Q: Is this a new concept, or are there already successful jazz orchestras in other cities?
A: There are currently approximately 35 community-based repertory jazz orchestras in major metropolitan areas throughout the country. The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra is patterned after the very successful Columbus Jazz Orchestra in Columbus, Ohio. The Columbus Jazz Orchestra has been in existence for nearly 30 years and currently has an annual budget of 1.5 million dollars.

Q: Why does Indianapolis need an organization like the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra?
A: Indianapolis has a rich and diverse jazz and big band heritage. It is routinely rated as one of the best cities for the arts in the Midwest. Indy is home to a world-class symphony orchestra as well as to other major arts organizations. Our economy and explosive downtown growth is the envy of cities across the country.
