Indiana's Symphony of Big Band Music

The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra is Indiana’s first permanent repertory Big Band jazz ensemble dedicated to serving the Central Indiana community at large. Composed of 17 outstanding professional instrumentalists and 4 talented vocalists from Central Indiana, the IJO was created to represent the entire dynamic history of the Big Band.

The IJO is patterned after many popular big bands, both past and present. Bands like Count Basie, Brain Setzer, Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton, Harry Connick Jr., Buddy Rich, Tommy Dorsey, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, and many others. The IJO is dedicated to performing the greatest jazz and popular music ever written. Music from songwriters like George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rogers, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Jimmy Van Huesen, and Duke Ellington. The IJO takes great pride in recreating the music that has withstood the test of time.

The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra combines instrumental and vocal music, along with dance and other entertainment elements to provide an exciting and unique concert experience. Our concert series is centered on different popular musical themes each designed to present a full variety show of big band music. All of this is offered in cabaret style table seating at several outstanding concert venues around the city of Indianapolis. The IJO also frequently performs big band concerts centered on jazz and nostalgia themes throughout the state of Indiana.
